Join MAPC and LivableStreets Alliance for a panel discussion of parking and public space in celebration of PARK(ing) Day, featuring:

·         Jackie Douglas of LivableStreets, Jackie Douglas of LivableStreets Alliance, on Park(ing) Day in the Boston region and their work to rethink urban open space and imagine how we can transform our urban street-space to better uses, such as transit, biking and walking.

·         Lisa Jacobson of Nelson Nygaard, on their work with municipalities around the MAPC region to revamp parking policy to unlock the value of this public asset;

·         Stephanie Groll of the City of Cambridge, on Cambridge’s innovative policies to reduce demand for parking even in areas of high growth, and use public parking as an asset to fund Complete Streets programs.

PARK(ing) Day is a annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. Since the project began in 2005 in San Francisco, PARK(ing) Day has evolved into a global movement, with organizations and individuals creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts around the world.

The mission of PARK(ing) Day, which this year occurs on Friday September 21 in cities around the Greater Boston region and the world, is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out!
