Bike to the Sea, Inc.
Groundwork Somerville is managing the construction of a section of the Northern Strand Community Trail in Malden and Everett. When complete, the trail will extend all the way to the beaches of Lynn and Revere. Hundreds of volunteers will help with the project, developing a renewed appreciation of the benefits of our urban environment. Several community events will take place around this project in 2010, to celebrate construction and to build community. Click Here
Green Team
GWS will host three teams of six to eight youth in the summer of 2010, and will focus on two significant environmental challenges in our community: the lack of green, open space and the lack of access to healthy food. The teams practice environmental stewardship, maintain local gardens, perform community education about green space issues related to the Green Line extension, and conduct outreach about community health. Schoolyard Gardens Program
Groundwork Somerville offers year-round garden-based education to children from kindergarten to eighth grade, in all of the city’s eight public elementary and middle schools, a public charter school, and a public library. In both in-school and after-school programs, children learn to plan, plant, tend, and harvest from their own school gardens. They cook with food they have grown. They learn biology, chemistry, math, English, and social studies in a practical, hands-on laboratory. Click Here
