In the summer after the 5th-8th grades, members of Groundwork Somerville’s Garden Youth Crew spend six weeks learning about gardening and the environment. They grow, maintain, and harvest produce in the urban schoolyard gardens for two to three hours two days a week. In addition, the crew members have the opportunity to perform community service, go on field trips, create a value-added product to sell at local farmers markets, and cook healthy snacks. Upon completion of the program, crew members receive a $50 stipend to acknowledge their contribution to the community.
