Garden Youth Crew
In the summer after the 6th-8th grades, interns in Groundwork Somerville’s Garden Youth Crew spend six weeks learning about science and the environment. They grow, maintain, and harvest produce in the urban schoolyard gardens for two to three hours each Tuesday and Thursday. In addition, the crew members have the opportunity to perform community service at a local organic farm, create a value-added product, and staff GWS’s booth at the Union Square Farmer’s market. Upon completion of the program, crew members receive a stipend to acknowledge their contribution to the community.
