Somerville SoilCycle
SoilCycle is a community composting initiative run by Groundwork Somerville’s youth employees that reduces waste and encourages environmental stewardship. This social enterprise provides a youth-led, bike-powered, eco-friendly waste management option for residences and small businesses in the city of Somerville through weekly pickups of their compostable materials. The pickups are made by youth on a fantastic bike cart built by Somerville High School metal shop students, and the compost is used in local school gardens. As part of Groundwork Somerville’s green job employment initiatives, SoilCycle creates opportunities for Somerville youth to gain leadership and entrepreneurial skills while learning the basics of small business management.

Our Local Business Partnerships:
Metro Pedal Power provides us with ongoing support for our bike fleet and has built us a trike to help us truck our compost all over the city!
Taza Chocolate provides us with a regular donation of cocoa bean shells – the byproduct of their chocolate production process – which serves as a great brown(nitrogen-rich) material to balance our piles and is an additional benefit as a mulch for our schoolyard gardens!
First Act Guitar Fabricators provide us with a regular donation high-quality sawdust of rare woods used in their guitar production. This too is a great addition to our piles, providing bulk, moisture and pH balance, and (very importantly!) smell dampening for the compost piles.
