The Green Team is Groundwork’s environmental youth employment program, which builds the leadership of Somerville youth to work for positive social and environmental change while providing an important opportunity for job training and skill building. Green Team members work across the city of Somerville building gardens, cleaning up rivers, and engaging the community in Groundwork’s mission of positive environmental change.
This past school year, the Green Team continued to build the Green Team legacy with two exciting projects — the South Street Farm and a Somerville Youth Jobs Campaign. The South Street Farm is Somerville’s newest urban agriculture project located at 100 South Street at the border of Cambridge and Somerville. The Green Team worked with Green City Growers to build raised bed gardens on vacant city owned land last spring. Produce grown in the gardens will be sold by the youth at Somerville Farmer’s Markets (including the Union Square Farmer’s Market and the Mystic Mobile Market and distributed to local food relief organizations including shelters and food pantries.
As always, the Green Team continues to focus on improving access to green, open space in Somerville. Working with Shape Up Somerville and the City of Somerville, Green Team youth are working to make sure that youth voice is included in the planning process for Somerville’s newest parks including the Draw 7 Park.
During Fall 2013, the Green Team will be maintaining the South Street Farm and Groundwork Somerville’s school yard gardens as well as working with partner organizations with community outreach projects. We will also be conducting leadership and job training workshops regarding financial planning, marketing, social media campaigns, and business skills.
