Green Team – High School Job Corps
A green job corps for high school youth in Somerville now in its fourth year, the Green Team continues to get bigger and better. GWS will host three teams of six to eight youth in the summer of 2010, and will focus on two significant environmental challenges in our community: the lack of green, open space and the lack of access to healthy food. The teams practice environmental stewardship, maintain local gardens, perform community education about green space issues related to the Green Line extension, and conduct outreach about community health. We expect to harvest two tons of locally grown produce and to create two new green spaces for the use of low-income and at-risk youth. The Green Team also operates year-round with a group of 10 youth leaders who delve deeper into issues of access to open space, opportunities for local food production/consumption and leadership development.
