Green Team

The Green Team, Groundwork’s environmental youth employment program, builds the leadership of Somerville youth to work for positive social and environmental change while providing an important opportunity for job training and skill building.  Green Team members are out in Somerville building gardens, cleaning up rivers, and engaging the community in Groundwork’s mission of positive environmental change.  Check out the Green Team’s newest video from Summer 2011: Growing Healthier in Somerville!

This school year, the Green Team is continuing to build the Green Team legacy with two exciting projects — the South Street Farm and a Somerville Youth Jobs Campaign.  The South Street Farm is Somerville’s newest urban agriculture project located at 100 South Street at the border of Cambridge and Somerville.  The Green Team is working with Green City Growers to build raised bed gardens on vacant city owned land.  Produce grown at the gardens will be sold to local restaurants and at Somerville Farmer’s Markets (including the Union Square Farmer’s Market and the new Mystic Market) and distributed to local food relief organizations including shelters and food pantries.

The Green Team’s Youth Jobs Campaign is working to increase the number and quality of youth jobs in Somerville.  Green Team members are meeting with state officials and legislators, surveying youth, and developing a plan to increase youth employment opportunities for youth in Somerville.

As always, the Green Team continues to focus on improving access to green, open space in Somerville.  Working with Shape Up Somerville and the City of Somerville, Green Team youth are working to make sure that youth voice is included in the planning process for Somerville’s newest parks including the New Harris Park and North Street Playground.

During Summer 2011, the Green Team helped to maintain Groundwork Somerville’s school yard gardens,  sold produce from those gardens at the Union Square Farmer’s Market, hand pulled invasive water chestnuts along the Mystic River, and worked with Somerville Community Access TV to produce two short videos about food and nutrition in Somerville.  You can now see these videos on SCAT TV’s website!
