College Internship Program
Over its ten years, Groundwork Somerville has hosted dozens of college interns from Tufts University (including its Tisch Scholars program), Emerson College, Lesley University, Simmons College, and Suffolk University, and has begun a major new partnership with Bunker Hill Community College. Students design and implement their own work projects with GWS staff supervision. They experience work in the non-profit sector, and learn first-hand the importance of collaboration with public and private community partners.
Current Interns & Projects
Ben Simons is the Urban Agriculture Intern at Groundwork where he assists in the coordination of SoilCycle and the Maple Syrup Project. He is also a graduate student in Tufts Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning Program. His interests include urban agriculture, food security, and sustainable cities, and he enjoys the balance of academia and real world experience he gets between studying at Tufts and his work at Groundwork Somerville.
Ryan Clapp coordinates service and development days for Groundwork’s Somerville’s new program, The National Park Preservers. He interns at Groundwork through the Tisch Scholar program at Tufts University, and is excited to be able to pursue his interests in youth development and service learning.
Jeremy Sendyk is in the process of obtaining his Associates Degree at Bunker Hill Community College for Computer Networking and Administration. He is currently working as our Network Administration Intern.
Luke McMahon is a graphic design student at Bunker Hill Community College has recently come on board in the capacity of Marketing & Outreach Intern, assisting Groundwork in launching its new marketing campaign. Much of Luke’s work focuses on visual arts: designing posters, programs, and flyers for upcoming events.
Sarah Capaldo, our Elementary Education Intern, is a student Sulfolk University in the Sociology Department. Most recently, Sarah has been working on creating curricula and activities related to the Somerville Maple Syrup Project.
Additionally, a team of students from the Urban and Environmental Planning and Policy Program at Tufts will be working on a report/feasibility study that assesses the current state of urban agriculture and local food sourcing in Somerville. They will examine current output capacity, in terms of how much land in Somerville is currently being used for food production (vegetable and fruit growing), places in Somerville that are currently installing backyard or community gardens, major organizations and players in the gardening community, and emergent businesses that are particularly enthusiastic in their support of locally grown produce and value- added products.
