Groundwork Somerville hired a crew of middle school youth workers to maintain the gardens at East Somerville Community School at the Edgerly Center, Winter Hill Community School, Healey School and the Argenziano School. The youth crew will join a team that is dedicated to learning about urban gardens, growing and harvesting fresh herbs and vegetables, and cooking, serving, tasting, and selling fresh veggies within the Somerville Community. In recognition of their care of the gardens and completion of the program, each youth will receive a stipend of $100 dollars.
The garden Youth Crew will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from July 8th through August 14th, 2008. A crew of approximately three students from each school will meet and work at their school garden site from 9-11am or 2-4pm on Tuesday and Thursday. All three crews convene for lunch and an activity to follow. We will take several special outings throughout the summer to local farms, or to visit other urban youth farming throughout the city of Boston . We will harvest veggies to sell at the Union Sq Farmer's Market once a month and at our weekly Family Garden Workshops. We will bike around the city and transport supplies, compost, and veggies using a bicycle cart. This year, the Garden Youth Crew will be responsible for a pilot program, the Compost Crusaders, where we will pick up food scraps from Somerville businesses by bike and transport them to the Somerville Community Growing Center's compost bins. The Garden Youth Crew is a great opportunity for a student who enjoys working outdoors and craves greater responsibility!
