Speakout for Local Jobs
October 5, 2011 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
TONIGHT Speakout for Local Jobs: Aldermen, Put Somerville to Work!
Out of work or know someone who is? Jobs are coming to Somerville, but we need to make sure there are concrete ways to guarantee that local people get these jobs. When our city invests, we should benefit.
Together, we can guarantee local jobs for local people. A city ordinance requiring developers and businesses to hire Somerville residents is currently before the Board of Aldermen. They need to hear from you how important this issue is. 620 residents (and counting) have already signed a petition in support of the Local Hiring Ordinance. Join us TONIGHT, October 4, at 6pm at the Elizabeth Peabody House to share stories, make some noise for local jobs and urge the alderman to vote on this important issue!
Hosted by Jobs for Somerville, which was founded by community members in response to the growing need for local jobs in Somerville. The committee is part of the Somerville Community Corporation (SCC), an organization dedicated to maintaining diversity and preserving affordability in Somerville by building and preserving housing, organizing for policies and people, and giving residents the financial skills they need to survive.
The Local Hiring Ordinance is supported by: The Somerville Community Corporation, Teen Empowerment, Save Our Somerville, SEIU Local 888, SEIU Local 615, Church of God of Somerville, UNITE HERE Local 26, Groundwork Somerville, the Jewish Labor Committee, Sal Querusio Demolition, Jobs with Justice and www.ward5online.com.
