Cleaning & Greening- Rain Garden Project at Mystic Housing
August 15, 2015 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Somerville is working to take on the environmental challenges of flooding and water pollution as part of its many creative initiatives to be a leader in sustainability. On Saturday August 15th a project to build a Rain Garden at Somerville Public Housings Mystic River Development will be organized in partnership with Groundwork Somerville’s Cleaning & Greening program.
Rain Gardens catch rainwater and filter it as it soaks into the ground, watering plants and cleaning our local rivers and streams. Rain gardens can also help reduce city flooding and are a being used to adapt cities to climate change. Rain Gardens are a new sustainable approach to landscaping that is growing in popularity and becoming a requirement for city landscapes. Rain Garden installation and other similar storm water best management practices (BMP) such, as rainwater harvesting and porous pavement installation are also becoming in demand job skills.
Groundwork Somerville has partnered with the Somerville Housing Authority and Massachusetts Workforce Alliance and a team of talented landscape designers to create a rain garden installation training and community building volunteer event.
The number of volunteers will be limited for this event so be sure to register here: Rain Garden Registration
Hope to see you there!
