Cyclists cruise new Somerville bike lanes

On a brisk Monday earlier this month, Mayor Joe Curtatone led a crowd of about a dozen cyclists down the new bike lanes between the Tufts University campus and Union Square.

In the years between 1990 and 2000, the number of Somerville residents who commute by bike rose from 842 to 1,251, according to city data. Curtatone, who has been recognized nationally for his Shape Up Somerville effort, wants to enable many more cyclists to get around city streets.
