Everyone at Groundwork Somerville is out of the office today, Oct. 12th! Vote Yes on Question 4 to Invest in Somerville this November 6!

This ballot question is an exciting opportunity for Somerville to benefit from state support for parks and recreation space, affordable housing opportunities, and historic preservation initiatives. Through a property tax surcharge of 1.5%, the city will create a preservation trust and our local funds will be increased through the state matching program. Already 148 communities across the Commonwealth already have access to these funds  – and Somerville should, too! Due to a change in the state legislation, the funds can now cover renovation of parks and recreation space–so making the Growing Center Master Plan become a reality might be just a bit easier. So, hopefully you are planning to vote Yes on Question 4 to adopt the Community Preservation Act. Visit the website for Invest in Somerville to learn more.

But we need YOUR help of this to become a reality! The Mayor and the Board of Aldermen did the work to get it on the ballot–now we need to get the votes.

Please join us Thursday, October 4th, Tuesday October 9th and Thursday, October 11th, between 5:30 and 8pm. Reminder: Urban Chicken Keeping Workshop TONIGHT!

October 3rd, 2012

It’s not too late to RSVP for the Urban Chicken Keeping Workshop tonight, co-hosted by NOFA Mass and Groundwork Somerville! You can RSVP online here.

Urban Chicken Keeping Workshop

You don’t have to be a farmer to keep chickens. Terry Golson has more than sixteen years of experience keeping a small flock of laying hens in her backyard that supply eggs for her family’s table. In this slideshow and lecture, Terry will share everything you need to know to get started with your own chickens. She’ll cover selecting the right breeds, housing, feed, and how to keep the hens healthy. Terry will talk about chicken behavior, predators, and daily chores. She’ll show you how she composts the manure and makes use of it in her garden. Terry speaks and writes frequently on this topic. You can find out more about her and her hens at www.HenCam.com.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact Drew Love at by email at drew@nofamass.org.
