Local Food and Music Festival
August 24th, 2010Wicked Local Somerville Posted Aug 23, 2010 @ 07:14 AM Somerville —
Groundwork Somerville will hold its annual Local Roots Food and Music Festival benefit Saturday, Sept. 11, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Community Growing Center at 22 Vinal Ave. Rain date is Sunday, Sept. 12.
The fundraiser helps sustain Groundwork Somerville’s green community efforts such as the Green Team youth jobs program. Local musicians showcasing their talents include Mark Santoro, Dylan Chace, Christian McNeill and the Redeemers, and DJ Marco Andre in his Somerville debut.
Door prizes include locally made syrup, Groundwork Somerville gear, and a grand mystery prize donated by a local business. Local organizations, such as Somerville Local First and the Swapaholics, will showcase their community and sustainability efforts.
Somerville Local First (SLF) will demonstrate the actual impact of buying locally. SLF will have visitors “deposit” the extra $25 that stays in the community from each $100 in local purchases into boxes representing local uses. This exercise will show what impact buying local can have and give individuals the ability to speak about their priorities in the community.
Groundwork Somerville will host activities to get attendees thinking about local impact. Redbones BBQ and Dave’s Fresh Pasta will donate treats, and there will be options for vegetarians.
The suggested donation is $20. For more information, email admin@groundworksomerville.org or call 617-628-9988.
Water Chestnut Hand-pulling Event, 8/28, 9 AM to 1 PM
August 23rd, 2010On Saturday, August 28, 2010, Groundwork Somerville, with support from the Mystic River Watershed Association and the Friends of the Mystic River, will host a community event focusing on the removal of invasive water chestnut from the Mystic River.
Using canoes, kayaks, and small boats, volunteers will pull the plants out of the water by hand and then deposit the harvested water chestnut at a designated shore site. (The pulled plants will then be composted at a nearby landscaping facility.) If you have a canoe or a kayak, you can bring your own. If you need a boat, Groundwork Somerville may be able to provide you with one (thanks to the generous cooperation of the Boys and Girls Club of Middlesex County). We only have 20 canoes available for volunteers, so please RSVP as soon as possible. Canoes are available on a first come, first served basis.
Volunteers should meet at 8:30 AM at the old DCR boat ramp adjacent to 75 South Street in Medford, MA. A limited amount of parking is available on South Street; additional parking is available on nearby Curtis Street, Maple Ave, Touro Ave, and Manning Street.
If you plan to attend this event, please RSVP by email to brad@groundworksomerville.org or by phone at (617) 455-1127. If you will need a canoe, please indicate that in your RSVP.
Immediately following the hand-pulling event, lunch and refreshments will be available for volunteers at the put-in site.
This event is sponsored by Groundwork Somerville, with support from the Mystic River Watershed Association, the Friends of the Mystic River, the Riverside, Mystic Wellington, and Winter Hill Yachts Clubs, and the Medford Boat Club.
Please Note: We need both boaters to pull water chestnut and riverbank helpers to take the plants out of the boats. Boaters are required to use life preservers/personal flotation devices.
For more information, please contact Brad Arndt, Mystic River Projects Coordinator, at brad@groundworksomerville.org or (617) 455-1127. Many thanks for your interest and support!

August 23rd, 2010Mystic River Green Team weekly update
August 23rd, 2010Hello everybody it is Joey again, back for the weekly Mystic River Green Team update. Last week went very well I would have to say our best week so far. Even though Tuesday was a scorcher of a day the team and I made it through the heat and we managed to pick over 95 baskets of the invasive water chestnut. On Wednesday the heat had receded and it was a bit more comfortable for picking the invasive water chestnuts. With the nice weather on Wednesday the team and I were able to collect a total of 115 baskets of the invasive water chestnuts. With our spirits high for another beautiful day on Thursday we hit the water with high hopes for the day. We had another very productive day of removing the invasive species a total of 125 baskets of water chestnut were gathered on Thursday. Altogether last week the mystic river green team collected a total of over 330 baskets of the invasive species known as the water chestnut. Thus far this year the Mystic River Green Team has gathered a total of 1595 baskets of the invasive water chestnuts – AWESOME!!!!
Just a reminder of our community pull this weekend. This upcoming Saturday, the 28th of August at the riverside yacht club. This event is open to the public and we at Groundwork strongly advise you to come out, have some fun on the river and help clean up our Mystic River of the invasive water chestnut. Please RSVP at brad@groundworksomerville.org!
