Community Meeting on walking route and community garden

Mayor Joseph A Curtatone and Ward 4 Alderman Walter Pero invite you to attend a community meeting to review and discuss Somerville’s projects under a grant from the Massachusetts Environmental Trust.

1) A Blueback Herring River Route pedestrian connection from Foss Park to Shore Drive

2) Accessibility and programming improvements to the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse grounds

First Ever Walk to the River Day!

In collaboration with the City of Somerville, Shape Up Somerville and residents, GWS will host 4 Walk to the River Days in 2010 and 2011.  Led by our Green Team, these days will highlight the accessibility between Foss Park at the Mystic River.

The kick-off to these 4 days will feature the Green Team and our Americorps NCCC volunteer corps, walking and cycling the route and showing community members the exciting new route to the river.  Coinciding with Bay State Bike Week, this great event will highlight the importance of walking and cycling in the city and will end with a giant celebration of SomerStreets on at the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse on Shore Drive.

Northern Strand Trail Clean-Up and Tree Planting Event

Please join Bike to the Sea and Groundwork Somerville for a day of trail clean-up along the Northern Strand Community Trail in Everett and Malden! 
 
When:  Saturday, May 22, 2010, 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM (rescheduled from April 17)
 
Where:  Northern Strand Community Trail between the Madeline English School in Everett and Medford Street in Malden (along the old MBTA Saugus Branch rail bed). 
 
Activities:  Removal of trash and debris from the trail area; cutback of brush and large growths of Japanese knotweed.
 
Where to Meet:  Madeline English School, 105 Woodville Street, Everett, MA 02149  (Parking available in the school parking lot)
 
What to Bring:  Work gloves, sturdy footwear, and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty!  (The trail is somewhat overgrown and may be very wet in sections.)  We’ll provide tools, trash bags, water, and healthy snacks.
 
There will also be a tree-planting event held at Seven Acre Park (right next to the trail) immediately following the clean-up from 1-4 PM.  This event will be hosted by the City of Everett and Groundwork Somerville, and is open to the public.  Parking available in the Madeline English School parking lot.

Somerville Maple Syrup Project Boil Down

Join Groundwork Somerville on March 13th at the Somerville Community Growing Center for the annual Somerville Maple Syrup Project Boil Down! Community members of all ages are invited to 22 Vinal Avenue between 10am and 4pm to watch and learn as sap from local sugar maple trees is boiled down into pure maple syrup over a warm fire. Attendees can expect to enjoy syrup-tasting, music, kids’ activities, and much more! Elementary School Visits to Maple Syrup Boil Down

Students from Somerville Elementary Schools will visit the GWS Maple Syrup Boil Down at the Somerville Community Growing Center.  Activities include taste tests, maple games, sappy songs or stories, boiling sap to syrup at the evaporator, learning to tap trees, and more.
